Enjoying this sick baby

I have been trying to keep her healthy, but I guess it was inevitable. Someone was generous enough to share a cold with us. Addisen has had a couple of rough nights with a runny stuffy nose. I can't imagine having all that gunk in my nose and not knowing how to get rid of it. She will finally get to sleep and then she will have trouble breathing and wake up again. She gets so upset when she is eating because she can't breathe out of her nose, and can't eat and breathe out of her mouth at the same time. At first I was getting really annoyed with her being sick and waking up all night. I remembered a talk that was given in April's General Conference that has helped me to cope. It talked about mothers enjoying the time with their children when they are young. It taught not to worry about the laundry that needs to be done, or the things that seem to frustrate you. There will come a time when your children have grown up and moved on and your heart will ache to have them little again. So I wrapped Addie up in a blanket and held her all night in the rocking chair. I sang to her (though not very well) and cuddled with her while she slept. I decided that at least I know what I can do to help her right now, and there will come a time when I have no idea how to help her through her troubles. So I guess what I am trying to say is that I was glad to have that time to hold my little girl and be a comfort to her. I'm sure it will get harder, and I'll wish that I could so easily make things better for her. That being said, I still don't enjoy holding her down and trying to clear her nose with those terrible blue syringes.

  1. Hello, I knew Kyle from high school and have therefore been peeking in on you guys and your beautiful daughter! Some tips we give at the pediatrician's office where I work: a cool mist humidifier will help the stuffiness. It should be within about 4 feet of her for it to do it's magic. You can also put a pillow UNDERNEATH her crib mattress to elevate her head and help clear her out as well. Good Luck!

  2. Thanks Cheryl! I've had the humidifier going, but I'll give the pillow a try and see if that helps at all. Nice to "meet" you by the way:)

  3. Poor thing! I hate those first few colds - they are horrible! I also liked that talk from conference, thanks for the reminder.

Another idea to make you both feel better: put the baby in a bouncy seat in the bathroom. Close the door and take a LONG hot shower. The steam works like a sauna and is great to clear her up, and you will feel better too. I also like the Johnsons Soothing Vapor Bath. Its a soap you add to her bath water. The vapors are great and I could see a huge difference in McKenzie as soon as we put her in it when she was Addisens age. Good luck!

  4. I don't have any great advice for you, but I can totally relate. It's so sad for both baby and mommy when she can't communicate how she's feeling. What a good mom to stay up through the night and just be there for her. And I agree-that General Conference talk was truly inspiring!

  5. I remember when we sang Addie to sleep. You're a great mom to do that! I think it's very comforting, and at school when something bothers me, I catch myself humming! I hope Addie gets better soon. LOVE YOU!

  6. Sorry to hear about the cold, hope she feels better soon. I'll have to remind myself of that talk more often!!! mostly on the nights that Isaak decides sleeping isn't as fun as eating.

  7. Shelese, Hi honey first let me say that as a first time mom I think you are GREAT! When my kids were small my mom gave me this poem and maybe you have heard it before but here goes:
    Babies Don't Keep
Mother,oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dust pan, poisin the moth, hangout the washing and butter the bread
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh,I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
    (lullaby,rockaby,lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
    (pat-a-cake,darling,and peek,peek-a-boo).
The shoppings not done and theres nothing for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
but I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
    (lullaby,rockaby,lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow
for children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow
So quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
    I'm rocking my baby,and babies don't keep.
    Love you guys!

  8. Poor little girl. Kenlee had the same thing. You could try some drops called Little Noses. I did that for Kenlee and it helped a lot.
